Sixteenth challenge starts in April
News that the Millennium Cup is set to go again is a positive hint of spring and coming summer!
The sixteen edition gets under way on Sunday 17 April when Norbury Park hosts Grafton and 2015 champions Telford Park play at home against Woodfield Grove, winners of the celebratory Millennium Cup Masters last year.
Wigmore, who have won the competition four times in its history, get under way the following week on Sunday 24 April when they travel to six-time winners Telford Park to open their campaign.
The league stage of the Millennium Cup runs from April through May and June, with the Final scheduled for the weekend of 17-18 September, after the summer holidays.
The Standard of Play criteria was adjusted at the Organising Committee’s meeting on 8 March when the draw for this year’s competition was done.
Every effort is made to keep the standard as level as possible so that new members of the five clubs can experience match play, often for the first time, in a friendly and unthreatening environment.
The spread of events across all ages ensures everyone gets a chance too, from the Under 16s to veterans.
Representatives from each of the participating clubs are now on the lookout for their squads so if you have an interest in playing this year, do get in touch with your’s soon.
“The Millennium Cup is a very special event that is enjoyed by many each year,” said Juliet Griffiths, the Committee’s Chair.
“We play two ties at home, and two away, so over the years have built very good relationships among all the clubs and their members.
“Last year we had the added event – the Millennium Cup Masters – to celebrate the competition’s fifteenth anniversary and it was a great success.
“It used the new Fast4 short tennis format and proved great fun and very competitive! Several clubs are adopting the format for similar events for their members.”
